Social Action Committee Events

Our Social Action Committee embodies the concept of Tikkun Olam (repair the world) and has touched the lives of individuals in Milwaukee, across the country, and around the world.

Through its direct volunteer efforts and drives, the Social Action Committee provides manpower or financial support for local, national and international programs such as the Hunger Task Force, Bottomless Closet, Jewish Home & Care Center, Cathedral Center Women's Shelter, Soles for Souls, Kids Matter, Jewish Community Pantry and many more, as well as giving back to Congregation Beth Israel Ner Tamid.

We have a strong, fun, close knit, group of dedicated committee members.  We appreciate all their hard work and support (and your hard work and support) to help make CBINT one of the strongest Social Action synagogues in the area.

It’s Hard Being Green!
Yes, being green can be hard but only if you do it alone--and only if you are a frog named Kermit. So, to solve that problem, the CBINT Social Action Committee is forming a Green Team to work on ideas to improve the environment for the CBINT community and beyond. Whether your interest is in recycling, organic gardening, energy efficiency/conservation, environmental justice, learning how Jewish values and rituals relate to the environment or just doing nature walks, please contact Dan Weber (414-228-8847 or kibbutzweber@gmail.com). Your ideas and energy are welcome!

Past Events

Christmas Day Volunteer Activities with Congregation Shalom
As in the last two years, we have the opportunity to participate with Congregation Shalom in meaningful volunteer activities on Christmas Day.  They are planning to visit:

1) The Jewish Home and Care Center on Prospect Ave. and Sarah Chudnow Community in Mequon where visiting volunteers will bring residents down to play games, mostly bingo.  Families with children would be very welcome.

2) Hospitals -- to include your choice of Aurora Sinai, Aurora Grafton, or Aurora St. Luke's -- where patients without families will be visited and given small gifts of sundries and a poinsetta plant (supplied by Congregation Shalom).

3) Meta House where residents (mothers and children) will be helped with their Christmas party.  Treats and gifts will be given out.

4) The VA to serve refreshments between 9:00 and 10:30 AM.  This opportunity is new this year.

Please call Elaine Nelles at 414-351-3987 if you are interested or would like to learn more.

Knitting for Charity

Meets every other Sunday 10:00am - 12:00pm

Come and knit greatly needed items for charity. Even if you don’t know how to knit, we’ll show you!  On a recent Sunday, the knitting group was serenaded by Hazzan Stein.

The CBINT Social Action Committee knitting group is a group of dedicated volunteers who make special knitted items for those in need within the Milwaukee area. To date they have made several hundred scarves, hats, gloves, blankets, and other warm items that keep people warm throughout the cold winter days. If you would like to be a part of this great group, please join them on alternating Sundays in front of the CBINT offices starting at 10 AM. Please call Marge Kulakow with any questions.

Cooking and Serving at St. Vincent De Paul

Join the Social Action committee as they cook and serve food for St. Vincent De Paul.  Cooking begins at 2:30 at CBINT and serving is from 5:30 - 6:15 at St. Vincent.

Pictures and write-up from last year's event.

On Sunday, January 20, 2013 these CBINT members help to build 440 Stock Boxes for seniors.  Each of the 440 recipient will now receive a box full of supplemental food including rice, peanut butter, cereal, canned fruit/vegetables, cheese, and other items. The Hunger Task Force is grateful for our efforts in the fight against hunger in our community.

Building these boxes is an important first step in feeding Milwaukee’s Senior citizens and volunteer groups like ours are making this possible on the front line.

Knitting for Charity

Every Other Sunday, 10-Noon

Come & knit greatly needed items for charity.  Even if you don't know how to knit, we'll show you!

Left to right: Two women & their children who received some of our knitted hats and scarves, Dorie Sand, Marge Kulakow, Dorothy Sapinsley, and Phyllis Reider.

The donation was given to The House of Faith.

"We appreciate all of the women that are knitting for us and we have a good time every time we get together to knit.  We always need more hands to knit as there is a great demand and many places where we can donate."  ~ Marge
